About The American Rodeo

The American Rodeo Facts and History

The American is an annual legendary western weekend that is held each year at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and represents the richest single-day event in all of the western sports.

Over the course of qualifier events across the country, competitors will all battle for what could be the biggest single-day paycheck of their careers. Owned by Teton Ridge, The American is a truly open competition in format. The iconic event brings together top professional rodeo athletes and honest, hardworking cowboys and cowgirls in a winner-take-all showdown, meant to crown the finest talent the world has to offer.

RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN is the result of a full year of work. Qualifying events are held across the country, throughout the calendar year as ropers and riders hope to compete in Arlington during the world’s richest one-day rodeo!

RFD-TV’s The American is an annual event that occurs each year at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. The American is now “the world’s richest weekend in Western Sports” and will pay out $2.35 million through a series of qualifiers, The Semi-Finals, and the final event, RFD-TV’s The American. The event unites the top athletes in the world from the PRCA and pits them against underdogs who advance from The American Semi-Finals, together to battle for the biggest single paycheck of their lives.

The Side Pot

The American now boasts an unmatched total purse of more than $3 million, which includes a $100,000 check for the individual winners of each discipline and a $2 million bonus pot that includes a carry-over bonus of more than $1 million from the 2021 event that was not won.

Each qualifier that makes it to the 2022 finals will be eligible for their discipline $100,000 prize money and will also have their shot at the bonus millions.

Teton Ridge is also proud that for the first time in the event’s history, women’s breakaway ropers will also be eligible for the $2 million added bonus.

How To Qualify For The American Rodeo

There are three ways to qualify for competition in THE AMERICAN:

  1. The top 10 contestants in the world receive invitations.
  2. Hopeful contestants can pay an entry fee to compete at “qualifiers” throughout the year. In past years, nearly 4,000 entries competed at 70 qualifying events to make The American Semifinals. Typically, the 700 athletes who qualify for the semifinals are competing for about 40 spots total in The American.

The Semi-Finals

THE AMERICAN Semi-Finals are held at Cowtown Coliseum in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Approximately 700 contests compete over four days for the chance to advance to THE AMERICAN and to compete for the $2,000,000 side pot.

The Stock

Rodeo and bucking bull companies from across the country bring some of their best animal athletes to test the skills of the bareback, saddle bronc, and bull riders.
