The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will once again close out the F1 season in 2021, a position it has regularly held since its introduction in 2010. Drivers will travel around the expensive Yas Marina Circuit in December before significant changes are made to the sport’s technical regulations for 2022.

The Formula 1 title race is set to go down to the wire as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have a straight shootout for the driver’s championship.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the final race of the season and it looks set to be a race for the ages as Mercedes and Red Bull go head-to-head one last time.

Plans to develop Yas Island were announced in 2006 in an attempt to make the location a tourist destination, with particular focus placed on creating a race track. The 5.5km ultramodern Yas Marina Circuit debuted in 2009, with several eye-catching facilities built on the man-made island.

The marina area harkens back to the walls of Monte Carlo, while part of the circuit actually passes under the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel. All of the grandstands are covered to protect spectators from the blistering desert sun, while the pit building features 40 air-conditioned garages to keep teams cool despite the pressure to perform.

As for the track, passing has proven to be difficult with track position and a balanced car key to victory. Although the track features a 1.2km long straight between Turns 7 and 8, much of the track is composed of mostly medium or slow speed corners which make the Yas Marina circuit a technical challenge for all the drivers on the grid.

There was no love lost last weekend at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, where the pair were involved in ANOTHER collision, as the Dutchman was forced to let the Brit overtake him.

But they finished in the first and second spots in Jeddah, meaning they are incredibly on exactly the same points total of 369.5 points.

There is even an unlikely scenario where Hamilton and Verstappen could finish the season on the same points total – and that would result in the Dutchman clinching world championship victory.

Hamilton is within touching distance of immortality, a victory for him this weekend would take him one world title ahead of Michael Schumacher’s magic mark of seven drivers’ championships.
